virtualvoyages: an old worn book on a black back ground, a glow at one corner of the book (Default)
Favorite location? But I haven't been everywhere yet.  Ah, well, we'll go with my default of babbling about the subject of the question my own way.

While SW:TOR isn't as pretty as some games, it's got pretty good graphics and a wide variety of planets, most of which I find quite nice.  And a few of which are appropriately eyesores.

I was surprised to find myself enjoying the deserty wide open spaces of Tatooine, which are somehow more appealing in game than they were in A New Hope.  Some of my friends hate Tatooine, but I rather like it.  (The Empire does seem to have shuffled all its least competent people there, though.  Which leads to some very funny overheard NPC dialogue.)

Alderaan is also very lovely, though I found myself wondering if I shouldn't have packed a winter coat.  (I expect to be bothered by that to a far greater degree when I arrive at Hoth. But there doesn't appear to be any cold weather gear in game.)

Dromund Kaas is horror movie pretty, though I wouldn't go so far as to picnic there.  (Kaliyo, you are so weird.)  It also feels like perpetual dusk, which makes me wonder how the heck the plants manage to survive so marvelously.  They must have epic photosynthesis abilities.  Or snack on the wildlife when we're not looking...

Korriban is another deserty planet, though you see so much less of it than Tatooine that it makes less of an impression.  Likewise, parts of Tython are pretty, but the WoWishness of questing there kind of ruins it.  (Why do the Manka Cats all have dentures!?  WHY!?)  And Balmorra somehow fails to leave an impression (even if the quests there do).

Hutta is appropriately disgusting, Taris is the sludgy swamp of wreckage everyone loves to hate (or just hates), Ord Mantell is just kind of there, and...

Then we get to the planets where my opinions make no sense even to me.  Coruscant and Nar Shaddaa are both city-planets and the questing all takes place in corridors and rooms, yet I don't care for Coruscant (except for the view when I'm outside) but enjoy Nar Shaddaa.  And I don't know why.

Actually, I have a suspicion why - maybe two suspicions - Coruscant is where you learn that the Republic is a frickin' mess and possibly hopelessly corrupt.  If my Republic characters manage to somehow get off their starting worlds without realizing that the good side is messed all to hell, they'll quickly learn it there.  You're fixing messes created by the Republic failing miserably to live up to anything resembling its ideals, discovering how speciesist it is just under the surface, and how corrupt it all is.

Nar Shaddaa, that neon-lit land of debauchery, slums, and rampaging gangs is exactly what you'd expect of Smuggler's Moon, the seedy jewel of Hutt space.  It's an awful mess, but you're not supposed to be on the side of the ruling establishment (in as much as there even is a ruling establishment).  Also, Empire side, you get to punch a Hutt.  And who hasn't always wanted to punch a Hutt?

There is also the fact that the quests on Nar Shaddaa have a bit more humor than the ones on Coruscant.  Now, I've had it claimed to me by people of a forum I visit that the Republic side is every bit as funny as the Imperial side, it's simply a different kind of humor.  A more blatant kind.  A kind that, apparently, sails right over my head.  (Excepting the humor of the Smuggler quests.  There is humor there!)

I don't suppose anyone could point out this blatant, possibly Benny Hill accompanied, humor that I'm missing on the Republic side?

My favorite character companion?  But I haven't met them all.  I don't even think I've met half of them yet.  How about I just blather about the companions I have met instead?

With one exception, the companions my characters have collected so far fall into one of two categories: characters I like and characters I may not exactly like, but find entertaining anyway.  The one companion I can't stand?  The Trooper's first companion, Aric Jorgan.  He is a dick from word one, blames your character for everything and tells you to your face that he doesn't respect you and doesn't think you're command material.  Excuse me!?  He's not entertainingly annoying; he's just annoying.  Also way out of line, and you're given no real way to deal with it.  I don't know how the Republic military works, but I'm pretty damn sure you can't talk that way to a superior officer in any real life military without getting in trouble for it.  The fact that Lt. Jackass is apparently the romance option for F!Troopers rather makes me want to throw things.  (For so very many reasons.)

Companion Characters I Like: (so far)

Bowdaar is a very nice, sensible wookiee.  I sometimes think he may be the "mom" of my Smuggler's crew.  Risha is still a bit of a mystery, but keeps being a better person than I expect her to be.  (And I can see why people want to romance her.)  I haven't gotten to the point that Akaavi joins the crew, but her introduction was awesome and I fully expect to like her.  (And possibly write her into my ficverse.)

T7 is so much fun.  I love the dialogue and I'm enjoying how much personality T7 has.  I also like what little I've seen of Kira, who appears to be about as much a rogue Jedi as my Knight is.  I expect them all to get along swimmingly.

Qyzen is also the awesome.  I'm not even sure why.  Somehow, he's just an incredibly likable big-game-hunting lizard dude.

(So far, I'm finding the companions the best part of playing Jedi.  But that's largely because I've still got "uck, Jedi" issues.)

Mako is awfully sweet (though she has a bit of a dark streak), and it would be awesome if my Bounty Hunter does actually get to romance her.  They'd make a cute couple.

I expected Vector to be boring, but he turned out to be very likable, if rather odd.  I love his combat dialogue, particularly his surprise at succeeding in fights.  And his companion stuff, so far, has been really fun.  Who'd expect to get to go to a Kilik party?

Vette has quite the mouth on her and is entertainingly baffled by my light sider Sith.  Practically every time my Warrior does something good, she's all WTF?  But they're developing a nice sisterly rapport that I find charming.  And Quinn is... I don't know what Quinn is.  I almost put him in the other category because I mainly find him entertaining.  He's so passionate about the Empire and so at a loss as to what to do with a giant Sith Zabrak flirting with him.

Companion Characters I Don't Exactly Like But Find Entertaining: (so far)

Corso is a sexist ass, but he's also completely dippy, and all of 19.  I'm sure my Smuggler would like to borrow the Sith Pureblood social emote from time to time, but, while I find him an appalling romance option, I do actually find him entertaining.  And I do have to admit that his heart is in the right place, and that his unbelievably backwards views of romance might be the result of his being both little more than a kid and having grown up in the back of the back of beyond.  (I also suspect he has zero actual romance experience.)

Kaliyo is completely untrustworthy, homicidal, and the worst "friend" anyone could ever have.  She is also hilarious.  I have done more spit takes on her dialogue (in cut scenes or just prompted by location) than any other companion so far.  Did she just say she felt like burning down the Imperial capital while they're walking through it!?  Did she just ask for twenty credits to get somebody to lick her feet?  "Dibs on the head!?"  Kali, no one else wants the head!  Did you just cheerfully offer to shoot my Agent if he actually changes sides!?  And her first companion mission?  Bwahahahahaha.  Oh, Kali, what did you think he was going to do?  She's a horrible, horrible person, but a very entertaining fictional character.

Khem is another horrible person but entertaining fictional character, at least so far.  (My Inquisitor has only just gotten him.)  He has some wildly funny dialogue - often centered around eating Force users, so I like him in that sense.  I can't imagine inviting him in for tea, though.

Have I created a unique headcanon for my characters? Hell yes! Pull up a chair, this could take a while.

My headcanon for them relies on both what info I've found in Wookieepedia and best guesses made from what the game gives us (that I've encountered so far). I've never read any Old Republic era fiction and I didn't play the KoTOR games. And I can't seem to find much information about either Republic or Sith Empire society, as a whole or by planet. If one can wild mass guess by oneself, I've done so.

This gets a little long )
virtualvoyages: an old worn book on a black back ground, a glow at one corner of the book (Default)
What aspect of the game upsets me?  Upsets seems rather strong wording, but there are a few things that seem...off.

There's the (previously mentioned) inequality between male and female characters as far as flirting and sleeping around goes.  (And it's disconcerting that F!Agent reacts to sleeping with someone to maintain her cover as if it's a bad idea.  M!Agent is never portrayed as regretting his sleeping around.*)

And, of course, there's the (also previously mentioned) lack of same sex romance options and the question of whether they'll implement them well.

Lastly (and this is a problem with nearly all games), there's the whole measure of a mook problem.  If you're going to have diplomatic options with the named NPCs, it seems bizarre that you slaughter your way to them first.  Add on the fact that the Light Side of the Force appears to oppose killing, and the game really is in need of some other options for characters.

*Though I would have considered walking away doing the *facepalm* "what was I thinking?" thing entirely appropriate to hopping in bed with the Sith lady who oversees the Bonus Series on Nar Shaddaa.  But that may only be because in my agent's case, he only flirted with her to be difficult.  Being taken up on it was... unexpected.  (But escaping out seemed wrong, since the error seemed completely in character.  Even if he doesn't make a habit of flirting with Sith (who he generally doesn't like), but she was half way decent (for a Sith) and the flirt options seemed the most appropriate dialogue options...)

A typical TOR gaming session?  Well, that rather depends on if I'm playing by myself or with friends.

If I'm playing by myself, I'll log on whoever I'm in the mood to play and probably play for a couple of hours, at least taking care of a grouped batch of missions.  I might muck around with crafting for a little, too, or at least try to remember to log everyone on to send crewmembers off to get stuff before I sign off.  Sometimes, I run through several characters, doing batches of missions here and there.  (This is one reason why I try not to have characters in the exact same place on the same side.)
Of course, if I'm playing one of the characters I'm meant to be keeping journals of, I'll take some notes from their point of view.  (And I have got to get that short story finished.  As well as work out how I'm organizing game verse/fic verse stuff.  Well, okay, I know how I plan to do that, I just need to note it somewhere.  Unless I already did and forgot. But I digress.)

If I'm playing with friends, I usually spend some time crafting/sending crewmembers off while we work out what we're going to do (play one of our teams, and, if so, which one, or run flashpoints to get someone gear).  Then we do whatever it is we've decided to do for the evening.

I should add that in any event, I nom your typical gaming munchies (and sometimes veggies as well) and often have to play around a cat, who figures if a human is sitting, it must be to give him a lap.

Bad in-game habits and flaws?  I have lots of those.

You know the alphabet soup that goes with this type of game?  I'm terrible at it.  I almost never group with anyone (excepting those I know outside of game) and I have a bad habit of freaking if people try to interact with me in game.  Granted, that isn't always true.  On rare occasion, you can find me chatting in General (even, at times, in character! (I play on RP servers)), or grouping with people to accomplish something specific.  But most of the time, my only interaction with my fellow players is drive by buffing.  And I often have the General chat turned off, so I don't even see it.

Oh, I RP with the game.  Not only do most of my characters (excepting a few who exist just to group with friends) have personalities, but I talk to the game while playing - responding to the area specific companion commentary, complaining about stuff in character, explaining why I did what I did since the game doesn't give me that option.  I'll even sometimes make use of the emotes.  And I kinda-sorta RP my evil team characters with my friends.  (Evil is easier to RP?)  But for the most part, I am too shy to RP with actual people.  (Even though I play pen and paper RPGs and have for years.  But I don't do that in public.)

I also have no interest in scouring the internet to be the best player evar.  I play for fun.  If I run into a mission I have trouble with, I'll see what other people have to say about it on Torhead or the like and either adjust my strategy or call in a friend for help.  (And I do help friends, likewise.)

I also care more about appearance than having the best gear.  Which means that I'll stick with my upgradable orange gear even if something temporarily better drops because I like my gear.

I suppose my tendency to stop and try to read the signs is a bad habit when I am grouped with people.  (Most of the signs are in Aurebesh characters and quite readable.  There are signs in other alphabets and Hutt Space is full of... what's the Basic equivalent to Engrish?)

Crafting: eh, it's there.  I sort of like crafting, but I can't say I've ever played a game where I thought "Crafting is awesome!"  SW:TOR is no different.  Though I like that you send your companions off to craft for you, and I like that crafting isn't level capped.  This means that it doesn't matter that my medpac makers are by far not my highest level characters - they can supply everyone, anyway, as long as I keep them in money and their companions busy.

Other than biotech and the ever useful medpacs, I can't say as the crafting has really netted me much, though.  I thought armormech would help with the "dear god, who came up with Agent armor, and do they have the same color perception and fashion sense as the rest of us? O_o" problem, but the only orange recipe so far had the same problem. (Fortunately friends and flashpoints did net me armor that wasn't eye-stabbingly awful.*  In fact, it netted me armor I actually like.)

Armstech is semi-useful, at least for gearing companions, but not as useful as I expected. I haven't gotten any other skills high enough to have commentary on them, really.  I imagine making color crystals will be fun, even if it doesn't prove to be useful as such.  (Though, given that there doesn't seem to be a source of crystals outside of making them - or finding them preinstalled in a weapon - artifice should be useful.)  I also expect cybertech to be fun.  I have a suspicion that my Force users will find synthweaving to be no help at all, though.

*I really do want to meet the person who came up with the medium armor for Imperials.  You leave Hutta in something that looks like Power Ranger armor and a wetsuit had babies, and it actually manages to go downhill from there.  I picked up a sand colored duster somewhere that was okay, but I don't think there were any pants anywhere that weren't either bizarre colors (pink?  really?) or appeared to involve wearing frilly underwear on the outside (or both) outside of the Hammer Station flashpoint.  (Hey, Imperial Uniform.  Nice for RP purposes, anyway.  Also non silly pants!)   And the black duster from Cademimu is spiffy.

Given what you all know of my sense of humor, you might expect my favorite attack/special move to be the Smuggler's Dirty Kick.  And, admittedly, I do enjoy that move, especially against people I just had a particularly irritating cut scene with.  (And Smugglers do interact with plenty of annoying people.)  But, for sheer awesome, I really can't pass up the leap that Jedi Knights and Sith Warriors get.

Leaping heroically (or villainously, depending on one's character) into combat is not only fun, it looks really damn cool.

My favorite class so far is Imperial Agent.  (I've even got the t-shirt.  Yes, really.)  Why?

First off, you get to be James Bond in space, which is really fun.  Granted, as a Light Sider, I'm nicer than James Bond, but I'm still an incredibly competent secret agent who sleeps with people for information and is snarky to people who deserve it.  (However unwise that can be.)

The class story, so far, is great.  Yes, you're protecting the not-exactly-good-Empire, but you're also protecting the citizens thereof, most of whom deserve protection.  You get to be wonderfully heroically stupid in the finale to Chapter One, while facing down someone who could squash you like a bug.

Your first companion is entertainingly wrong (particularly if you're playing Light Side), and is probably the companion I most wish I could respond to the out-of-conversation-comments of.  (Kaliyo, please stop saying you want to burn down the capital city while we're walking through it.  The security officers aren't known for their sense of humor.)

Imperial side is, on the whole, much funnier than Republic side. (Or my sense of humor is a bit off, one of the two.)

Also, playing a Light Side Agent seems more heroic, or at least more dangerous, than playing other Imperial classes Light Side.  Bounty Hunters aren't really Imperials, and Sith have quite a lot more power.  I may find some of the stuff I've gotten away with a bit hard on my suspension of disbelief (I don't think I've committed out and out treason on any class quests, though I'm not too sure about the one in the Dark Temple.  Just side quests.  Wait, that doesn't really help.), but I enjoy the hell out of it anyway.

I will grant that Smuggler runs a close second, since it is so very Han Solo-y.  And has the most humor of the Republic side stuff I've played so far.

This blog began as an imaginary journal shared across worlds by my MMO characters, with some commentary on MMOs.  Virtual voyages seemed like a highly appropriate name - it concerns the voyages of virtual people.  Except I ended up not doing much with it until I started playing SW:TOR, at which time it promptly mutated into a journal, MMO commentary, and fan fic repository.  The name remains appropriate, though.

I created this blog separate from my personal blog for reasons now lost to the mists of time.  Especially as I've done a terrible job of actually keeping them separate.  I have a few people who comment on both and my personal blog subscribes to this one.  (I have the same problem with my two net nyms.  I've connected them sufficiently that I might as well have never bothered to have two.) I should never attempt to lead a double life.

How are we defining "active character" here?  Because I've got one of everything, and two of some things.  (Which would make the answer to altitis "yes," I suppose.)  But lets ignore the characters who exist only to group with friends. They don't really have headcanon and some don't even really have personalities.  (Though my two evil characters at least have personalities.  They just have scary personalities.)

Limiting it to characters with personalities and headcanon, that leaves me with... er... that's still sort of complicated.  Five?  Four and a half?

Thar be pics now! )

Favorite item(s)... Hm, this will take some thought.  Do ships count?  Because I rather like the completely unsubtle ship Agents get.  Given how much ship theft there is in the game, I'm surprised you never have to deal with some fool mistaking it for a rich brat's space-Ferrari and trying to hotwire it.  (Unless, at some point, you do.)  For a supposedly undercover operative, you sure don't have a nondescript ride.  I sometimes get the feeling that if it were possible, the game would have you going about introducing yourself as Last Name, Name Last Name to everyone.

(Not that the Smuggler's Millennium Falcon-esque ship isn't rather awesome, too.  Or that the Bounty Hunter's method of acquiring a ship isn't amusing.)

Other items of note include:

The widget a Jawa named Veek gives hapless Republic citizens on Tatooine to go test on malfunctioning droids.  Little bugger never mentions that if it malfunctions (and it will) it zaps you.  (Yes, some of the fun of the game comes from the game's - or is that my - sadistic sense of humor.)

The letters mentioned in my last 20 days post, even if they aren't really items.

I can't remember if it actually appears as an item (though I imagine it does), but the fact that the head of Ghar Bodya is disgusting to the quest giver who asked you to retrieve it is both amusing and appropriate.  Did she think a severed head was going to be lovely?  Especially on meltingly hot Tatooine?

As well as many others.

Favorite quest or quest chain?  Man, I'm not good at picking favorites at the best of times and I haven't played all the classes (okay, any of the classes) to max level yet.  So many unknown possibilities.  I guess I could blather about some of my favorites so far.

Some minor spoilers found here )

I'm going to revert to the original version of the meme for this day, since it's an easier question to answer.  Besides, maybe I haven't had my best experience yet. :P

First, I've got to say that I got a coworker's help to build a computer that could play SW:TOR because my old computer (despite having a pretty awesome video card - having many geeky friends comes in handy, the old computer was a cast off and top of the line a few years back) was not going to be good enough.  I'm kind of proud of that.  And managing to install my old video card in my new computer on my own.  I'm easily impressed with myself.

So, having acquired a SW:TOR capable computer the fun way, and finding out what servers my friends planned to play on (they wanted to be able to try out both advance classes of each class), I set about making one of everything.  Starting with the two classes I'd been interested in since I first heard they were in the game: Smuggler and Imperial Agent.  I knew I'd like those classes, and I do.  Oh so very much.  (I may be the only person on the planet enjoying the dps version of those classes.  I blame it on years of playing a mage in WoW.)

Like a number of other people, I thought making a green, female Han Solo sounded like a good idea and voila! Jezari was born.
I'd also decided before the game even launched that my agent would be a Light Side James Bond in spaaace, and I was pleased to discover that it was actually possible to make a handsome guy, which I did, and voila! Kyrian was born.

The only other character I made that day that I haven't since remade due to not being "right" was my bounty hunter, the tough (she's got a scar and everything), but actually nice Savler.  Strangely enough, those three characters are also the characters I've ended up writing fan fiction about.   Make of that what you will.

I will say that it took almost no time of game playing for my characters to have personality beyond what I'd started with.  And probably even less time for me to decide that SW:TOR was the best MMO ever.  (Other MMOs?  What other MMOs?)

So my first day was making characters, starting a couple of them, and falling utterly in love with the game.  Story. I can haz story. *siiiiigh*

I started this blog as a place to babble about MMOs and write journal entries in character as various MMO characters I had.  Then I bought SW:TOR and things took a left turn (or is it a right?) at Albuquerque and there was suddenly actual fan fic.  (Which I am supposed to be writing.  Like right now.  Since it's been over a week since I posted part two.  I suck.)

Um, how does one get an entry out of this question?  I suppose my reasons for starting this blog were just too straightforward and easily summarized.

So, um... How about them...are there sports teams in the Star Wars Universe?  There must be.  I don't know the names of any.  Nevermind.  I have been trying to sort out the timeline around SW:TOR, and the ages of various companion characters.  (Because I am easily distracted by missing information.  I don't know if that makes me research inclined or just prone to "Oooh, shiny!")  End result: I can't figure out most companion characters' ages.  Though Corso is 19 (two dialogues plus math = 19).  At least I finally know when the Treaty of Coruscant is in comparison to when the game is taking place.  And nailed down how old my characters are.  And that was completely off topic.

Going to go write fan fic now.  *looks at clock*  Oh, who needs eight hours of sleep.  *goes to work on fan fic anyway*

Alrighty then.  Life has been a bit of a distraction, and I've been failing at being organized, so, er, I'm going to try to get organized here.

First order of business: what do I do about my original idea of journal entries as opposed to the fan fic I've been writing?

Solution: Journal entries will resume/continue.  And there will be fan fic.  Journal entries are game continuity; fan fic is, obviously slight alternate timeline/alternate universe/whatever, and should be considered to have diverged immediately after chapter one (for smuggler continuity) and to have diverged somewhere before that for agent continuity.  I realize this is temporally wonky.  I will also have to get back to you on divergence from bounty hunter continuity once she's involved.  Because having things nice, tidy, and sensible is apparently beyond me.  *headdesk*

I realize that's a bit confusing.  And that having two different continuities going on here is a bit confusing.  But I miss my in-character reactions to game events entries.  And I have my own storyline in mind for my fan fic.  Icons and tags should keep things clear, I hope.

Second order of business: 20 days of SWTOR.

[personal profile] nebelstreif  proposed this slightly altered meme on swtor.dreamwidth.org/2016.html and their version looks doable, so I figured why not?

Day 01: Introduce yourself

Hi, I'm Mac.  (Calling myself Virtual Voyages would just be silly, and Mac is a short form of my last name.  I've gone by it before, since my first name is extremely common.  It's also appropriate to someone who carries a Swiss Army Knife and is a little too fond of 80s TV.)  I write, read, play SW:TOR (and, theoretically, other MMOs *eyes dormant accounts*), love Star Wars, work at a library, and love music and hiking.

What I'm doing here is covered in the sticky post and in the earlier part of this post. *points up*

Um... I live in a neat old apartment building built in the 1930s.  I have a pet cat (more like he has a human servant).  I am absolutely terrible at introductions.  Oh, yes, I play pen and paper role playing games - currently D&D.  I live in the mountain west, in a sometimes embarrassing city.  I walk to work.  I love history.  And I have probably now given enough information for (theoretical) stalkers to find me.

As to what I'm like, I'm both extremely shy and love to entertain people.  If I believed in astrology, I'd blame my tendency towards polar opposites on being a Gemini.  I find life too horrible to take seriously, and I like making people laugh.  And I think I've been personal quite long enough.
